What You Need to Know About Spiders
Different Species. There are over 600 different types of spider in the UK. As well as having eight legs, most spiders have eight eyes too.
The False Widow. Most spiders make silk which they use to create their spider webs and capture their prey for eating. In the UK all but a few spiders are harmless to humans and some people can have different levels of reaction to the False Widow.
What Spiders Are Found In The UK
Most spider infestations occur during the autumn and winter months, when it is too cold for them outside this is also when adult spiders are fully grown and looking for a mate. The most common British spiders you are likely to see in the home or office are as follows:
Cellar Spider.
The Cellar Spider is also known as the Daddy Long Legs. They are found in the house, garages, sheds and other buildings. They eat other spiders which is hard to believe when you see the size of their bodies. You can’t imagine them going up against a Large House Spider but they do eat them.
Noble False Widow Spider.
The False Widow Spider gets bad press due to it’s bite containing a venom of medical significance which can cause a secondary bacterial infection. To date they have not caused a death but some serious swelling can occur if bitten. Most bites occur through crushing in which skin squashes the spider which leaves them no other option than to bite to stop it happening. An example of this would be rolling on to one in bed.
Large House Spider.
The Large House Spider is most commonly found in the house in the autumn time. The male will be going walk about, looking for a mate and they are very visible due to their size. Its the size that scares people however they have a non medical significant venom and cant hurt humans.
Common House Spider.
Common in human habitation the adult spider is a lot smaller than the large house spider. They have a black and brown banding on the legs which helps to identify them.
Garden Spider.
The Garden Spider is the most commonly encountered Orb Web Spider found in the garden. They are easily identifiable by the extremely large abdomen. If they are found indoors they have ended up there by accident as they live outdoors.
Mouse Spider.
The Mouse Spider is harmless to humans and can often be seen inside the home. they are dark brown in colour and a velvet like appearance.

You should clear away webs regularly using a duster or a hoover, both to prevent spider activity and so you can see when new webs occur. One or two webs don’t necessarily suggest a huge spider infestation, but if you see lots of webs, then you should consider contacting us if you need help.
Due to the chemicals we use, we can’t treat green garden areas, trees and bushes as the chemical would affect all wildlife if this is your issue then we will need to give you further advice but we must ensure all treatments are delivered following all laws and legislation.
